Kajiya Scores Brace in Comeback Win Over Botswana
Zambia came from behind to beat Botswana 3-1 in the opening match of the COSAFA Girls’ Under-17 football tournament at the Region 5 Youth Games Maseru 2020.
After failing behind from a Serati Modisenyane curler in the 29th minute, the Kangwa Kaluba coached side came back purposeful in the second half and overpowered their neighbours at Setsoto stadium in Maseru.
It was Green Buffaloes Women Football Club striker Lucy Kajiya who launched the fightback for Zambia after she levelled from Jessy Zulu’s assist four minutes from the start of the second half to set up an intriguing match.
19 minutes later, Kajiya was fouled in the penalty box by Maduo Radijeng and Malawian referee Eness Gumbo awarded Zambia a penalty which was skied by Blessing Zulu.
However, Zambia continued pressing and skipper Lubasi Pumulo opened up Player of the Match, Jessy Zulu to put her side in the lead for the first time with seven minutes left to play.
Kajiya then got her brace and Zambia’s third of the game when she pounced on a failed clearance by the Botswana defence, worked well in the box and unleashed a fierce shot past Karabo Luka in the 90th minute.
Zambia will face Namibia on Saturday at 10:00hours looking to grab one of the finals spot in the three-team Girls tournament.
