Teen Ref Mbotela Relishes Cosafa Opportunity
Budding Zambia referee Raphael Mbotela has provided a fervent side show for the Zambian contingent at the Region V Games Maseru 2020 with an insightful interview with the FAZ Media Team in Lesotho.
Mbotela got a call-up to be part of officials for this year’s COSAFA Under-17 Championship taking place under the auspices of the Region 5 Games, and immediately, he has set his sights on officiating on the biggest stage.
“I am very happy because at my tender age, there are very few people who can officiate matches like I am doing,” the 17-year-old said.
Asked on how he manages to combine school and officiating, the soft-spoken but confident Mbotela did not look further for an answer.
“When I am in school, I always concentrate at school and when I am at officiating matches, I always think about football,” Mbotela said.
FAZ Referees Manager Aziph Banda said Mbotela’s call-up was not a mean achievement for the country.
“The future looks bright and after Raphael was called to COSAFA, a lot of young referees have shown interest on furthering their career,” Banda said.
“This is what we want as FAZ; we want competition so that Raphael should have people beside him who should be competing, it’s very exciting.”
The Boys tournament kicks-off this afternoon with Botswana taking on Malawi at 13:00hours while Zambia entertain hosts Lesotho at 15:30hours with both matches streamed live on Cosafa.tv
