FAZ DEVELOPMENT CORNER: 30 Female Referees Undergo FIFA Training

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has tapped into the 16 Days of Gender Activism by hosting a FIFA Member Association Women’s Referees Course.

Thirty women drawn from across 10 provinces have converged in Lusaka under the tutelage of FIFA Instructor Gladys Lengwe and CAF Physical Instructor Bernard Chabala.

Stanley Hachiwa is the CAF Technical Instructor for the five-day program.

Each province has been availed three slots for the program the seeks to take match officiating to another level.

FAZ executive committee member Mwemba Mujala who oversees the Referees Committee said women in refereeing had done so much with little support.

“In football, we are making serious steps towards upgrading the status of women. We have seen many women break new grounds in our game with minimum support. The instructor for this program is our very own Gladys Lengwe who is a CAF accredited official. May I congratulate madam Lengwe for leading the way among women in football. There are several other women who are making our nation proud,”

Mujala said FAZ was heightening efforts to empower various football stakeholders to ensure that football development happened wholesomely.

“We take particular interest in the empowerment of women in football. We have drawn participants in today’s training across the 10 provinces. We are hopeful that by spreading the benefits of knowledge to all the 10 provinces, we will help actualize the decentralization process that is one of the hallmarks of the current administration.”

He added: “As FAZ, we believe that by continuously training personnel involved in the management of the game we will take our game to the next level. We have a 10-year strategic plan that has placed referee training as one of its core focus areas.”

FIFA Assistant Referee Diana Chikotesha who recently returned from Cairo from a VAR expert training also interacted with the trainees.

The all-Zambian cast of instructors is testament of the strides made by locals in the game.
