Chipolopolo Players Abroad: Midweek Roundup
A wrap-up of mid-week performances by Chipolopolo stars playing in various leagues across the African continent and beyond.
Denmark – First Division
Chipolopolo midfielder Lubambo Musonda played 84 minutes for AC Horsens who were stunned by HB Koge in Round 14 the Danish First Division. A 71st minute goal by Nemanja Cavnic sealed the victory for the home side at SEAS-NVE Park in Koge to condemn Horsens to their third straight loss in all competitions. Despite their second straight league defeat, Lubambo’s side are still stuck with 21 points, eight behind leaders Lyngby.
Europe – UEFA Europa League
Chipolopolo strikers Fashion Sakala and Patson Daka were in action for Rangers and Leicester City respectively in their UEFA Europa League Group Stage games. Sakala was named in the first XI and was replaced by Ryan Kent in the 56th minute in the 1-1 draw with Brøndby IF in Copenhagen.
Daka also started alongside Nigeria striker Kelechi Iheanacho against Spartak Moscow at home in a Group C tie and went on to be replaced by Jamie Vardy in the 71st minute. Vardy missed a penalty four minutes late with the two teams tied at 1-1. Nigerian Victor Moses netted the goal for Spartak Moscow while Ghanaian Daniel Amartey was on target for Leicester City.
Both Rangers and Leicester City are third in their respective groups after four matches played.
Morocco – Botola Pro Inwi
RS Berkane registered their second straight win in the Botola Pro Inwi when they edged Mouloudia Oujda 1-0 at the Stade Municipal de Berkane in Berkane. Chipolopolo midfielder Clatous Chota Chama started the highly contested match before he paved way for Mehdi Oubila in the 56th minute.
The win moves Berkane to fourth on the table with 15 points after nine matches.
South Africa – DStv Premiership
Stellenbosch FC’s unbeaten run in the 2021/22 DStv Premiership continued when they beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg. Chipolopolo midfielder Nathan Sinkala completed the match that takes them second of the table with 19 points, three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. Striker Lazarous Kambole was an unused substitute for Chiefs.
Cyril Chibwe made the substitute’s bench for Baroka FC in their 2-1 away loss to TS Galaxy at the Kameelrivier stadium in Kameelrivier. It’s now three losses in five matches for Baroka, who have seven points in eight matches.
Goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata conceded for the first time in three matches in Sekhukhune United’s 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates. At the Dr. Petrus Molemela stadium in Bloemfontein, striker Gamphani Lungu was on the losing end for Supersport United in their 2-1 defeat to Royal AM. Lungu started the match and was replaced by Bradley Grobler in the 65th minute.
Striker Mwape Musonda replaced Ruzaigh Gamildien in the 71st minute in Moroka Swallows’ goalless draw with Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Princess Magogo stadium in Durban. Swallows are 12th with eight points from nine matches played.
Tanzania – NBC Premier League
Former Zanaco FC striker Roger Kola scored the only goal for Azam FC in their 1-0 win over Geita Gold FC in a week five fixture that also got Paul Katema heavily involved in midfield. It was only Azam’s second win of the season, but it was enough to take them to seven points and eighth place, eight behind leaders Yanga.
At the Benjamin Mkapa stadium in Dar es Salaam, Meddie Kagere’s low-drive header in the fifth minute of additional time was the difference in the 1-0 narrow win over Namungo. Midfielder Rally Bwalya controlled proceedings in midfield as Simba moved up to second on the table with 11 points, four behind leaders Yanga after five matches played.
