Chipolopolo Players Abroad: Midweek Roundup

A midweek wrap-up of performances by Chipolopolo stars playing in various leagues across the African continent and beyond.

Democratic Republic of Congo – Vodacom Ligue 1

Defender Kabaso Chongo netted TP Mazembe’s second goal in the 3-0 win over Don Bosco in the Vodacom Ligue 1. Tandi Mwape and Rainford Kalaba were not involved. Mazembe are now fifth with 9 points, four behind leaders Lupopo.

Denmark – Danish Cup

AC Horsens were knocked out of the Sydbank Polaken by Vejle after going down 3-1 in extra time at the CASA Arena in Horsens in a round 4 tie. Chipolopolo midfielder Lubambo Musonda started the match but was replaced by Mikkel Lassen in the 77th minute.

Aron Sigurdason’s third minute strike for Horsens was cancelled out by a last-minute goal by Allan Sousa to send the match into extra time. Kevin Custovic made it 2-1 for the visitors before the Brazilian, Sousa completed his brace five minutes from time.

England – Premier League

Leicester City booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup with a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Brighton and Hove Albion at King Power stadium.

Two Chipolopolo players were heavily involved on opposed ends of the highly contested fixture, with striker Patson Daka starting for the Foxes while midfielder Enock Mwepu came off the bench and made an immediate impact to the Brighton side.

Mwepu headed in Marc Cucurella’s cross to make it 2-2 in the 71st minute and force penalties. Daka converted his spot kick in the win and so did James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Ricardo Pereira.

For Brighton, Mwepu missed his spot kick while Neal Maupay also shot his effort off target while Pascal Grob and Alexis Mac Allister converted.

Russia – Russian Cup

Chipolopolo striker Evans Kangwa struck for Arsenal Tula in the 32nd minute but his goal was cancelled by Veles Moscow midfielder Artur Galoyan to send the group 3, round 3 tie to penalties.

Substitute Klings Kangwa was one of the four Arsenal Tula players to convert their spotkicks in the 4-3 win that sends them to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Sweden – Allsvenskan

Chipolopolo players, Emmanuel Banda and Edward Chilufya will be in action this evening for Djurgardens IF in the week 25 match against IFK Goteborg at Gamla Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg.

Djurgardens have dropped to second position in the Allsvenskan, but a win will send them back on top and two points clear of Malmo who have 48 points.

Scotland – Scottish Premiership

Substitute Fashion Sakala was fouled in the box by Aberdeen defender David Bates to gift Rangers an 81st minute penalty in the week 11 match. James Tavernier converted to make it 2-2, a result that sent Rangers to the summit of the table with 24 points, two, better than second placed Celtic.

South Africa – DStv Premiership

Chipolopolo and Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata kept another clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Augustine Mulenga’s Amazulu FC in the DStv Premiership. It was a third consecutive clean sheet that Nsabata kept and United’s third straight win which sent them to fourth in the Premiership table.

Mulenga started the match for Usuthu and was replaced by Bongi Ntuli in the 46th minute.

Tanzania – Premier League

Chipolopolo and Simba Sports Club midfielder Rally Bwalya made no mistake from the spot in the 1-0 win over Polisi Tanzania FC. Simba’s win moves them to third place in the 16-team table with seven points, two behind leaders Young Africans after three rounds of matches played.
