The ‘Amazing’ Grace Hails Copper Queens Comeback Spirit

Zambia Women National Team striker Grace Chanda says her side showed fighting spirit to earn qualification to the final round of the 2022 Morocco Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers at the expense of neighbours Malawi.

The Copper Queens came from a goal down to beat the Scorchers of Malawi 3-2 on the day and 4-3 on aggregate to book a second round AWCON qualifier date with Namibia in February 2022, and Chanda said the team effort showed that the Copper Queens prepared adequately for Malawi.

“We prepared well for the second leg and worked on the missed chances so we were ready to score and managed to qualify to the next round,” said the Red Arrows striker, who provided an assist for Rachael Kundananji’s opener.

“We had a fighting spirit and a winning heart. We will work hard because Namibia is a strong team but we will push hard to qualify to the AWCON.”

After going down to an early Asimenya Simwaka goal in the eighth minute, the Copper Queens struck twice in a space of 17 minutes through Kundananji to lead 2-1 at the break.

After Chanda was denied by the crossbar in the second half, Wezi Mvula’s 71st minute strike drew Malawi level before Lushomo Mweemba scored the Copper Queens’ winner three minutes later from a long-range free kick.
