A wrap-up of weekend performances by Chipolopolo players playing in various leagues across the African continent and beyond.
Denmark – First Division
AC Horsens came from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw with Vendsyssel FF at the CASA Arena in Round 12 of the 1st Division. Midfielder Lubambo Musonda replaced Thor Lange in the 46th minute to see-off the remainder of the match. The result left Horsens in fifth position with 21 points, six behind leaders FC Helsingor.
England – Premier League
Striker Patson Daka became the first ever Zambian to score in the English Premier League when he netted Leicester City’s fourth goal in the 4-2 win over Manchester United at the King Power stadium. Daka’s record also meant that Zambia became the 105th country to have a goal scorer in the EPL. Midfielder Enock Mwepu who is just returning from injury, was on the bench as Brighton and Hove Albion drew goalless at Norwich City.
Sweden – Allsvenskan
Midfielder Emmanuel Banda and striker Edward Chilufya will be hoping to earn their places when Djurgardens IF host IF Elfsborg in a week 23 fixture at 19:00hours. A draw or win will be enough to take Djurgardens to the summit of the league ahead of Malmo who have 44 points but lead thanks to a better difference.
Russia – Premier League
Midfielder Klings Kangwa’s stunning strike sent Arsenal Tula fans into wild celebrations at Arsenal stadium as it ensured the club collected maximum points in the 2-1 win over leaders Zenit St. Petersburg in a week 11 fixture.
Kangwa collected a pass from Danil Stepanov before creatively getting past his markers to unleash a fierce shot past Stanislav Kritsyuk. Kangwa was voted man of the match. His countrymate, Evans Kangwa, made the bench for Tula.
Scotland – Scottish Premiership
Fashion Sakala was not involved as Rangers conceded a 90th minute goal to draw 1-1 with Hearts of Midlothian at the Ibrox stadium. Despite the draw, Steven Gerrard’s lead the table on 20 points, one better than Hearts after nine matches played.
South Africa – DStv Premiership
Striker Gamphani Lungu scored a quickfire brace to propel Supersport United to a 2-0 win over Baroka FC in a week seven tie. Lungu started the match on the bench and was introduced at the start of the second half in place of Jamie Webber. The win took United to second place on 15 points, a point behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Kaizer Chiefs striker Lazarous Kambole broke his long-standing goal drought when he scored Amakhosi’s fourth goal in the 4-0 over Chippa United at the FNB stadium. The win was Chief’s first in five matches.
Former Zesco United goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata collected another man of the match accolade as Sekhukhune United beat Cape Town City 1-0 to record their first home victory. The newcomers are now fifth on the log with 11 points after playing seven matches.
At Moroka Swallows, striker Mwape Musonda featured for 79 minutes before he was replaced by Matlala Makgalwa in the 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch FC. Nathan Sinkala put in a full shift for Stellenbosch.
Malawi – FDH Bank Cup
Zambian coach Dan Kabwe guided Silver Strikers to silverware at the weekend when they won the inaugural FDH Bank Cup in Malawi. Strikers beat Ekwendeni 2-0 win courtesy of goals from Frank Banda and Stain Davie.
CAF Champions League
TP Mazembe defender Tandi Mwape was at the heart of defence in the goalless draw with Amazulu in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie. Rainford Kalaba was introduced in the 64th minute for Joel Beya while Kabaso Chongo made the Ravens bench.
For Amazulu, Chipolopolo midfielder Augustine Mulenga came back into the line-up and tasted 84 minutes of action before he was replaced by striker Lehlohonolo Majoro.
Chipolopolo midfielder Rally Bwalya started in midfield as Simba Sports Club beat Jwaneng Galaxy FC 2-0 at the Botswana National stadium. Simba will be hoping to see-off the tie when the two teams meet for the second leg in Dar es Salaam.
CAF Confederation Cup
Midfielder Clatous Chota Chama was named in the starting XI as RS Berkane registered a vital 1-0 away win against US Ben Guerdane at Stade du 7-Mars in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Midfielders Charles Zulu and Paul Katema started for the George Lwandamina coached Azam Football Club in the goalless home draw with Pyramids FC of Egypt. Roger Kola was on the bench.
