Copper Queens Target Podium Finish at COSAFA
Zambia this afternoon squares off against hosts South Africa in the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship third-place playoff match looking to finish the tournament on a high.
Today’s match gives the Copper Queens a chance to leave Gqeberha with a victory ahead of this month’s 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations Qualifiers, but it will not be an easy task against their fellow wounded opponents.
Kick-off at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium is at 12:00hours and the match will be live on SuperSport Channel 229 Variety 4 and Cosafa.tv. It will be followed by the Tanzania Vs Malawi final at 15:00hours.
In the last meeting between the two sides, Banyana Banyana triumphed 3-1 in an international friendly and the third-place playoff match provides an opportunity for the Copper Queens to avenge the defeat.
Assistant coach Florence Mwila hinted that there will be major changes but was quick to state that finishing third would be deserving of a side that has only leaked one goal in open play out of four matches.
Zambia lost 3-2 on post-match penalties to Tanzania after the two teams finished 1-1 in normal time while South Africa were beaten 3-2 by Malawi at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.
Catherine Musonda and Ng’ambo Musole will fight for the number one spot with Eunice Sakala also eyeing her tournament debut while Lushomo Mweemba, Margaret Belemu, Agness Musase may be joined by either Mary Mulenga, Margaret Mulenga, Vast Phiri or Patricia Lampi at the back.
In midfield, either Milika Limwanya, Thandiwe Nkhata or Esther Namukwasa may be deployed to provide cover for the defenders and creativity on the ball alongside Mary Wilombe, Elizabeth Mupeso and Avell Chitundu.
The race for the golden boot is led by Sibulele Holweni who has four goals, but Copper Queens skipper Grace Chanda and striker Ochumba Oseke Lubanji have an opportunity to add to their three-goal tally and take with them the prestigious prize.
