Copper Queens Seal COSAFA Third Place Finish
Zambia beat hosts South Africa 4-3 on penalties to finish the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship in third place and win the bronze medal.
Two days after losing their semi-final 3-2 to eventual winners Tanzania at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Gqeberha, the Copper Queens were taken to penalties once again after Sibulele Holweni’s 76th minute strike cancelled out Ochumba Oseke Lubanji’s header in the 20th minutes.
Apart from defender Patricia Lampi, Oseke, player of the match Lushomo Mweemba, midfielders Esther Namukwasa and Milika Limwanya all scored for Zambia. Janine Van Wyk, Gabriela Salgado and Oratile Dikgosi Mokwena converted their spot kicks while Noxolo Cesane and Holweni had their efforts saved by Catherine Musonda.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on their second final in two years, the Copper Queens were still able to celebrate a play-off victory and their first against South Africa ahead of their Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi in 11 days’ time.
During the prize presentation ceremony, Zambia bagged the Fair Play award while goalkeeper Ngambo Musole got the Golden Glove accolade after she kept two clean sheets in three matches she handled.
