Zesco, Dynamos Set for Epic Charity Shield Clash
Reigning MTN Super League champions Zesco United and ABSA Cup champions Lusaka Dynamos are set to lock horns in the Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield at Woodlands stadium on Saturday.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the match will be played behind closed doors but will be live on Supersport 229 Variety 4 and GOtv Zambia platform at 15:00hours.
Zesco United, fresh from being crowned nine times champions, will be seeking to grab the Shield for the fifth time, having won the accolade in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2017.
Now under the tutelage of Coach Numba Mumamba who won the Shield in 2019 during his successful spell at Zanaco, the electricity men are eager to stake claim to the title at the expense of Dynamos whom they lost to on post-match penalties in this year’s ABSA Cup final.
“It’s good that we have this game to play because they are certain players that we need to assess in this game so that we see how ready they are as we also prepare for the CAF game,” Mumamba said.
While aware of the threats posed by Dynamos, Mumamba said winning the Charity Shield will set the tone for their 10th Super League title chase.
“The league has become very competitive, there are no minors in the league now and it is difficult for any team to say they are going to win the league,” he said.
“We are ready for Lusaka Dynamos and we are looking forward to a very good game tomorrow.”
It is sentiments from Mumamba that have tickled Lusaka Dynamos assistant coach Manchi Janza, who says his team is ready to snatch another victory against Zesco.
“We are going in full throttle forgetting about the past results. I still believe that they are going to come with a variety of tactics but we are ready to absorb whatever punches which may come and I believe we are going to carry the day,” Janza said.
The Charity Shield, sponsored by Atlas Mara, is traditionally the first match of a new season that acts as the curtain-raiser for the Zambia Premier League.
It pits the MTN Super League champions against the ABSA Cup winners.
