PRESIDENT’S CORNER: UEFA Assist Leadership Retreat Game Changer

I am back this week after a fulfilling football weekend. I joined my executive committee at Bonanza Hotel in Lusaka for leadership retreat with experts from UEFA.

It was time well spent as we sought to expand our knowledge on the management of the game. It was a very comprehensive program that covered various aspects from administration, technical, marketing and communications.

The retreat also served as an advanced orientation for the newly elected executive committee that must deal with the herculean task of decentralization. Having already undergone an orientation by FIFA and another orientation by a renowned FIFA Instructor Ashford Mamelodi I have no doubt that the executive committee is ready to get down to work fully aware of their responsibilities and expectations of the Zambian people. With our constitution fully aligned to FIFA statutes we expect that our management style should conform to that standard.

On the pitch, we have lined up some key assignments for our senior men’s national team and the Copper Queens.

The Chipolopolo will play the Teranga Lions on June 6 in an international friendly. We are closing in about two more matches in West Africa to ensure that they get enough competitive action ahead of the September Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

We have been busy with the Copper Queens whose Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification remains a source of great joy for us. The team will play Mozambique away on May 30 as part of preparations for both the Africa Women Championship qualifiers that kick off next month and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. We must keep our eyes on both assignments and ensure that the team is well prepared.

We are also working on a possible European expedition for the team although we continue to grapple with the barriers posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. We have pending invitations that we are looking at and will be unveiled in due course. With the committee of eminent women fundraising for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games changing gear, we expect that we will be in a good position to prepare the team adequately.

Let us continue supporting our girls as they will be flying the African continent flag as sole representatives in the women’s category.

Have a productive week and remember to keep safe!
