Govt Ponders return of fans back to Stadia
The Sports minister Emmanuel Mulenga says his ministry is actively engaging his health counterparts on the possible return of fans to stadia.
Speaking to journalists after witnessing the 2021 ABSA Cup final between Zesco United and Lusaka Dynamos on Saturday, Mulenga said it was the desire of government to see fans returning to the stands once the Ministry of Health gave the all clear.
“It is the desire of the ministry to see fans in the stadium, but you should know that we need to protect the lives of our citizens, it is our responsibility as government to protect every citizen of this country,” he said.
“So, we are in consultation with the ministry of health, until when the ministry of health says that now we are good to have fans in the stadium we will certainly do so.”
Fans are currently banned from attending matches due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mulenga also implored sportsmen to consider embracing the COVID-19 vaccine that was now available in Zambia.
“It is very important that sportsmen and women get vaccinated so that we can reduce the transmission of COVID-19 between players and fans. There is a need for us to protect players and protect their families,” he said.
