Zesco, Konkola Blades Seal ABSA CUP Semi-final Places
Zesco United and Konkola Blades earned ABSA Cup semifinal qualification with deserved wins over Kansanshi Dynamos and Forest Rangers respectively.
While Zesco United laboured to defeat the Eden University National Division outfit Kansanshi Dynamos, it was the giant killing act of Konkola Blades that stole the headlines after slicing through Forest Rangers.
Dubbed ‘Sharp Razor’ the Lewington Mujembe drilled side were the fan favourite even among the few officials and scribes in the stands owing to the Covid-19 ban on fans.
Emmanuel Mwaba broke the deadlock on 72 minutes with his wonderfully struck effort proving enough to seal a semifinal place for Blades who will face Zesco United on April 17 at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.
For Zesco the route was a lot harder with the match decided on spot kicks.
Tafadzwa Rusike had put Zesco United ahead on 88 minutes but his effort was cancelled out two minutes later from the spot by Scotch Mwanza who bravely stepped up to send Toaster Nsabata the wrong way.
However, Knonkola Blades’ Mathews Muleka had his penalty saved with Zesco United tucking away all the five spot kicks to win 5-3.
Zesco United are the record winners of the ABSA Cup with six titles since the tournament was introduced in 2007.
In the Sunday semi-finals Lusaka Dynamos will play Prison Leopards while Zanaco take on Kabwe Warriors.
